In theory, the idea of singling individuals out for this label allows companies to focus their development resources and plum opportunities where they will have the greatest return — on people who have the capacity to grow into higher levels of leadership (typically, hierarchical leadership) in the company. In some European companies, the word "talent" is used in a similar way. The "talent" are those singled out for special investment. More information:Click Here

Spencer PATTERSON

Manufacturing Engineer

Schlumberger

"Could you introduce you and your background ?
I'm originally from Kansas City, MO USA. Earned a BSME from Purdue University in 2002. MSME from Georgia Tech in 2004 and Mastere Professionelle from ENSAM (French Grande École) in 2005. I participated in the Georgia Tech Lorraine program spending 2 1/2 years in Metz, FR.
Could you sum up briefly your professional career ?
I began working full-time in late 2005 for Schlumberger, the leading oilfield service company. Started as a field engineer working on land and offshore drilling rigs. First assignment was in Kazakhstan. Later worked in the USA, Turkey and Scotland. After 18 months I was transferred to one of our engineering and manufacturing centers near Paris as part of Schlumberger's "Tech & Field" development program for new hires.
What does your job entail?
I currently work in the Manufacturing Technical Support Section for Wireline, one of Schlumberger's product lines. I am responsible for a portfolio of tools that we manufacture and it is up to me to resolve any technical issues that arise during the manufacturing process and uphold our high quality standards. I'm also involved in assuring the quality performance of our suppliers and offering support to Schlumberger field locations worldwide.
What do you enjoy about your job? What are the most challenging facets?
I enjoy the fact that everyday there is something different that comes across my desk, that I am considered a person with expertise and that I have responsibility within our group. My job can become challenging when we have an event that degrades the quality of the products we manufacture. Quantities are low but quality standards are very, very high. Some of the equipment we manufacture costs more than most Italian sports cars. When quality is not up to our standards, the culture at Schlumberger is to investigate all the way to the root cause, and eliminate it forever. That is one of the more difficult aspects of my job.
What did you take away from your experiences at GTech Lorraine?
At Georgia Tech Lorraine I learned to work and interact with people of different cultures and backgrounds, I understood what it feels like to be a "stranger in a strange land" and I discovered a lot about how people communicate. I was also fortunate to travel all over Europe, and my experiences during that time have forever shaped me in very positive ways. I would never have had these experiences in Atlanta.
What are the assets of your GTL double degree you noticed through meeting with HR?
A double degree from Georgia Tech and one of its European partner institutions is immediately recognized by recruiters as a world-class education. Having a diploma from a foreign university is concrete proof that you already have international experience. That sets you above the crowd. When the time comes for recruiters to make a hiring decision, having backpacked across Europe for three months doesn't count for much.
How did Tech Lorraine help you get where you are now?
I simply would not be where I am today without Georgia Tech Lorraine. The path I am on began with my decision to study abroad with Georgia Tech. My experiences and how I have developed personally and professionally at Georgia Tech Lorraine have left my future wide open, full of nothing but possibilities.
Could you explain us how the Double program helps you finding a global job ?
Having a double degree shows companies that you can work and function internationally. You immediately become a more attractive candidate for the job. Being "in-demand" offers you many more opportunities."

Jean-Marc PAGES

Process Engineer

Imerys

I am currently working as a Process Engineer for Imerys in California and I am a former ENSAM-Georgia Tech double degree program participant. The relationship between ENSAM and Georgia Tech institutions is solid. The feedback I had on the education provided during the program were very positive. As a matter of fact, I was surprised by the choice given to me to become specialized in many various fields.

Whether during my program, my job search or even in my everyday life, I have had the chance to find out Georgia Tech is really respected on the international stage.
This program will give you a lot of credibility when you are considering to give your career an international dimension.
In my particular case, I now regularly collaborate with our colleagues from Europe and South America, being based in the US. I would have not imagined this when I first started the ENSAM-Georgia Tech program almost four years ago.

Constantino SCHILLEBEECKX

Engineer - High Potential Program

Blaupunkt

When I decided to go to Graduate School, I was looking for a program which had both a very high academic reputation as well as one which offered international experience; I was also looking for something that would allow me to stand out from all the other potential candidates applying for future jobs. Thus, I felt like the GTL Double Degree program was a perfect fit for me. It also goes without saying that this program offered great opportunities to experience rich culture both within and externally to school. Who wouldn't choose this program!?

Through the classes in the French Engineering school, ENSAM, and through all the numerous cultural experiences with the people of France and the surrounding countries I gained a much more open and adaptive spirit. I realized that business can be very different in France and that the American approach might not always be the best one. Furthermore, I gained a much better appreciation for the simple things in life such as wine and friendship as well as what it means to nurture a home away from home.

Simply put, it allowed me to secure the job of my dreams in Germany. Now I get paid to learn a new language, travel around Europe and discover a whole other way of life. Without the double degrees that GTL had offered me, this would not have been possible.

Laurent ALTEIRAC

Project Leader

Schlumberger

Growing up, I moved a lot and enjoyed discovering new cultures and new places from within. Later, it was a thrill to study on three Arts&Metiers campuses in France, at the Universidad Politecnica de Valencia in Spain, and on the campuses of Georgia Tech Lorraine and Altlanta. After graduation, I started working with Schlumberger, an oilfield service company, which offers fantastic technical challenges and opportunities in a truly international setting. Within a team, I design, test and prepare the manufacturing of downhole hardware. I really enjoy having clear deliverable objectives and the means to meet the technical/time/cost targets, while meeting fantastic people along the way. Recently, I trained in Qatar Vietnamese, Tatar and Indian field engineers on our newest prototype developed in France.

Georgia Tech Lorraine has been key to all this. It offers a selection of highly scientific courses with another dynamic than the French system. It opens one's mind and strengthens adaptability and English skills. My double degree ENSAM / GTL was essential to getting my first job with Schlumberger in Houston, Texas.

Last but not least, I met Rebecca, now my wife, at GTL. Our son Adrien was born in Paris last year. He is both French and American.

Woww, Georgia Tech Lorraine can really have a lifelong impact.

Lean Six Sigma: Human Ressources

Schlumberger

Growing up in a small town in the smallest state of the US makes you want to dream big and discover the world. Unfortunately, the demands of an engineering education rarely allow the opportunity to study abroad. So, when I stumbled upon the GTL program, I was immediately interested.

The program was a very positive experience for me, personally and professionally. I knew that my MS degree would be recognized by companies, but I didn’t anticipate the value of the ‘soft skills’ I would learn as well. I believe that it was my improved adaptability, newfound fearlessness, and improved language skills that helped me secure my job with Schlumberger. Since signing on with Schlumberger seven years ago my career has already taken several paths. I started in a traditional design engineer role before being selected to participate in the foundling Lean Six Sigma (continuous improvement) initiative where I worked with manufacturing and engineering groups improve the efficiency of their operations. The work that we did in this initiative caught the eye of senior management so that I’ve been asked to continue this work within the Personnel function.

My work with Schlumberger has taken me to 9 countries on 4 continents and has me currently based back where it all began…in France! I believe that my GTL experience helped me learn to break barriers for myself, get the ‘bug’ for discovering new countries and cultures, and to maintain a sense of curiosity. So, even if I’m now pretty far from my GTL mechanical engineering courses in terms of my day-to-day activities, the skills I’ve learned there continue to help advance my career. As a nice side-effect of my participation in GTL, I made permanent friends from different countries, had wonderful cultural adventures, and even found lifelong happiness: my husband Laurent was also a GTL participant. Our son Adrien is just another example of positive Franco-American collaboration!

Taking my engineering studies outside the borders of the United States was not an easy choice when I was searching for a graduate program, but it is one that I have never regretted. At first I was unsure about how the details would work: where would I live, would I need a car, how would I open a bank account, and especially, did I need to know the local language.

While most of these questions were answered within a month after arrival, some larger ones have only become clear in retrospect. My engineering coursework in France allowed me to study in the same global context that today's big engineering questions are being asked. Although I started with no knowledge of French, my time in the double degree program with GTL and ENSAM allowed me to be ready to begin my first engineering job internationally.

Joshua RAYNER

Project Manager

Schlumberger

I chose to participate in the GTL program having already spent a year in France as part of an undergraduate Mechanical Engineering degree. The opportunity to spend another year in France as part of my graduate studies was too appealing to pass up, and, in fact, played a part in my decision to attend Georgia Tech for graduate school. The time spent studying in Metz made for a unique and almost intimate environment, since there were relatively few students in each class- this promoted relationships both among the students and with the faculty.

Some of my classmates from GTL are still among my best friends today (of both French and American nationalities), and we have an annual mini-reunion every year. The time I spent at GTL and ENSAM in Paris have also contributed to my career- living and working with students and faculty of other nationalities have uniquely prepared me for a career in which maintaining international working relationships is a major requirement.

Since graduating from Georgia Tech in 2000 I have worked for Schlumberger, an international oilfield services company. Schlumberger is an extremely diverse company, and I find that I utilize the skills developed working and living abroad frequently in the professional environment.

Sandra KOLVICK

Mechanical Engineer

Fluor Corporation

I chose the double degree program for its unique challenges that provided me with more than the standard academic education, as well as the opportunity to travel and explore.  As we converge upon globalization, it is critical to be able to communicate quickly and effectively.

Working at Michelin's corporate headquarters in Clermont-Ferrand gave me a first-hand opportunity to learn the complexities of French business practices.  Coworkers truly appreciate showing respect for their heritage, constantly learning the nuances of their business customs, and willingness to engage individual differences that are part of working with people of different backgrounds.  Now, I am more adept at facilitating efficient communication in order to produce successful results.

GTL gave me the opportunity to discover another culture in a way that I never could as a tourist.  My friends there helped me to understand the deeper aspects of their individual values and cultures; my time with them enriched my education much more than I had anticipated.  I presently place more emphasis on the quality of my life rather than the drive to benchmark against others.  Success is being happy with who I am and where I am going, not having more than everyone else.

Daniel STAN

Principal Engineer, Video Algorithms

ST Microelectronics

My experience at GTL was a great one. As a fresh graduate from Romania I had a once in a lifetime chance to study towards a very valuable degree that it's recognized and accepted throughout the world.
I had great professors and great coursework that have provided me with advanced knowledge and expertise in the field of Digital Signal Processing and Digital Communications.

The level of knowledge and expertise that I achieved as a result of pursuing the GTL degree have provided me with the opportunity of being hired in various High Tech companies where I could directly apply that.
That level of expertise coupled with my follow up work experience have allowed me to progress in my career and be able to participate in the creation and delivery of various successful products to the marketplace that are part of major TV & Display manufacturer's brand names.

Ion LEAHU-ALUAS

Business Analyst

Arcelor Mittal

I chose the double-degree program because I thought it was important in today's professional environment to have an international education and an international point of view. It was also a way for me to come back to Europe and discover new opportunities, after 11 years spent in the United States .
The GTL experience taught me how to work and study in a different setting from the one I was used to in the United States. I was able to make lasting relations with people from diverse backgrounds that will help me build a global network.

This program had a very positive impact on my career, as it allowed me to distinguish myself from other young graduates who did not have an international dimension to their education. This translated to many interesting job offers from serious companies, many global leaders in their domain, and also a higher starting salary.

The rationale was actually twofold: 1. I wanted to differentiate myself from the rest of my intake. 2. I wanted to have the opportunity to study abroad and to interact with foreign faculty and students. On a more practical plan, GTL and SUPELEC did a superb job to make it manageable to study in both institutions.
It brought me the differentiation factor that I was looking for (which subsequently helped me to get in a Top 10 MBA). During my time at Tech, I also had the opportunity to appreciate the difference in teaching between French Grandes Ecoles where great emphasis is put on theory and American universities where hands-on work and team projects play a central role in the learning.

The approach of the professional impact is a bit tricky as the impact is difficult to appreciate. I realized that a Master of Science from a renowned American university is an asset during job interviews. This holds in France but it is especially obvious abroad where French Grandes Ecoles are totally unknown. I also think that the more pragmatic approach that I developed at Tech helped me many times in work situations where I had to solve “unconventional” problems.

Cedric GRIGNARD

International Investment Manager

Aderly - Lyon

My Business School in Grenoble [Grenoble Ecole de Management, www.grenoble-em.com] gives the opportunity to its students to carry out their 3rd year abroad. After passing the exams and with a good ranking, I succeeded to choose and register for a MSM degree at the Georgia Institute of Technology (Atlanta, GA). One of the main reasons I selected the GTech was to acquire knowledge and skills in technology, complementary to my management education.

The GTech experience provided me with another way to study, to assess and analyze situations, and to interact in a different socio-political and cultural environment. It opened and broadened my academic and professional vision. Collaborating with senior and experienced managers already involved in the professional world, provided me with a lot of inputs to on the global business environment.

This double degree supported my applications to the different organizations and firms I worked with, showing the recruiters my ability to perform in various contexts and to work with multicultural teams. It opened doors to my career and completed my address book. Moreover, working in a different language, i.e. writing and reading in English, gave me high-added value in language skills.

Finally, my double degree MSM (Georgia Tech., Atlanta) and MBA (GEM, Grenoble) widened my scope of understanding on cultural, social, and above all, business levels, and gave me access to opportunities, possibilities and networks of skilled, motivated and high-profile alumni community.

Today, I am still using all what I have learned during my higher education when I am advising and assisting international companies. As International Investment Manager with the Lyon Area Economic Development Agency [Aderly, www.aderly.com], my daily mission is to support and to provide advice to CEOs and other executives in their project of setting up an office, opening a subsidiary, transferring their headquarters in Lyon. As such, I need to adapt constantly to our international and multicultural clients, understanding their needs, proving empathy to match perfectly with their expectations, and filling their needs. That where my year at GTech and the experience I acquired during my missions abroad after my MSM is very helpful.

Steve FOUHAL

McKinsey

I first met the previous director of GTL while on a Summer internship at Georgia Tech in Atlanta. At the time I was still doing my undergrad in Electrical Engineering with EPF, an engineering school near Paris. The summer internship was a way for me to get to know Tech (and Tech to know me!) before I apply. When he explained to me what GTL was, I immediately loved the idea of splitting my studies between Atlanta and Metz. This was going to help me stay close to my family for another semester, while getting the education that only Georgia Tech can offer. I remember the Americans had a blast travelling around Europe whenever we had free time. The "human size" of the program makes GTL a close-knit, multi-cultural and fun group.

I have found that employers in Europe and the US consistently love the international nature of the program. Ever since I graduated 4 years ago, I have been moving. First England, and now Chicago where I work with McKinsey as an operations consultant. My job makes me work with people from different cultures and takes me many different places; I truly feel that my experience at GTL prepared me to work not only with diverse teams, but also in very different cultural settings.

A.T Kearney

“I decided to apply to the Master’s in Mechanical Engineering at Georgia Tech since it is ranked in the top 5 US programs and since it has a worldwide reputation in education and research. I had the opportunity to work on two very interesting theses: one on fuzzy logic applied to machining while at Arts et Métiers ParisTech, and another one on a fuel optimization strategy for hybrid vehicles at Georgia Tech.

Thanks to the Georgia Tech Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering, I quickly found a job at Schlumberger in Houston, TX. After 5 wonderful years developing products, filing patents, answering to customer requests in various parts of the world and improving the company’s processes, I went back to Europe where I now work as a consultant for A.T. Kearney.”

Philippe SUCOSKY

Assistant Professor, Department of Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering

University of Notre Dame

I was in my second year at ENSAM (Aix-en-Provence) when I was notified of the opportunity of completing a Master’s degree at Georgia Tech. Getting some experience abroad in a prestigious University was my first motivation to enroll in the program.

My personal experience at GT-L was very positive. It reinforced my speaking capabilities in English, made me socialize with American students, and showed me how different the American and French education systems were. Because I decided to stay in Atlanta after the end of my Masters to pursue a PhD, I had the opportunity to learn more about and appreciate the American culture.

My choice to follow the GT-L curriculum greatly impacted my professional life. After completing the course and thesis requirements at GT-L and then on the main GT campus in Atlanta, I graduated with a Master’s degree in May 2000 and decided to pursue a PhD in Mechanical Engineering. During the course of this degree, I felt more attracted by academia. I obtained my degree in May 2005 and prepared my applications to faculty positions while working on my postdoctoral training in the department of Biomedical Engineering at Georgia Tech.
I am currently an Assistant Professor at the University of Notre Dame in the department of Aerospace and Mechanical Engineering. The knowledge and research experience that I got during my curriculum at Georgia Tech Lorraine and Georgia Tech were critical in the attainment of my goal: filling a tenure-track faculty position in a major research University.

Olivier ROULLEAUX DUGAGE

Areva

I've chosen to achieve a Master at Georgia Tech for several reasons :

-First I am convinced that an international experience has a great interest in terms of career opportunities and personal achievement.
-I definitely wanted to get a double degree in a well known university.
-GTL makes it financially sustainable.
-Finally, the "Ecole des Mines de Nancy" is a partner school and therefore I could get a lot of feedback about GT.

I was hired in AREVA group, an international company. The business often requires feeling comfortable with English language. Something important is also the double degree: it reveals a real will to extend deeply ones skills; for these two reasons I had a quick start in my career in this group. And since a master is a long term investment, I hope the best is to come! I'm currently in an entity which has a dynamic subsidiary in the US; why not?

Alexandre MAURY

TOTAL, Field Operations Engineer

Total

Before going to GTL, I had been thinking about the US for a very long time. The GTL/ENSAM partnership enabled me to make this project a reality and to complete my curriculum with a Master from GT.
As I expected, time I spent on Metz and Atlanta campuses enabled me to improve my knowledge in Mechanical Engineering, thanks to the high quality of the staff and facilities. I have also been able to study totally different subjects, such as Finance, Marketing, Management...

But the most rewarding thing was probably the cultural aspect. Discovering the American way of life and way of thinking, being in touch with people from all around the world was for me a tremendous experience.
As a part of the curriculum, I also spend a 6 months internship on a gas production site for Total oil company.Today, I believe that both those technical and human aspects played a major role in getting my first job. Hired by Total as a Field Operations Engineer a few months before my graduation, I have now the opportunity to start with a good position on an offshore project in Scotland.

I chose GTL because I have always wanted to study abroad and there is no better way to see Europe and get credit for classes than being there for four months. This experience has helped me grow as an individual. You just sort of have to figure things out sometimes on your own.

When there are no phones and no one speaks your native language fluently and you are completely lost in a city that you have never been in, you grow as an individual in using the senses to get you around and to resolve the issues. Any future students should definitely give it a shot because I did and it has turned out to be a once in a lifetime experince. The education plus traveling experiences I had were absolutely amazing. Not to mention, there is just something sexy about the foreign accents and the way the women dress and present themselves. It's a must-see and must-do adventure to partake in the journey at GTL.

Florent SADOT

Sales and Purchasing Manager

TF1 Group

Olivier GUERREAU LAMBERT

Trading Systems Manager

Total

I chose the GTL double degree, because I felt that having an international master's degree was a requirement for the carrier path I wanted to follow. I was so interested by this double degree, that I pursue a double doctoral degree with a French Doctorat and a Georgia Tech Ph.D.

This experience was a great benefit for me, not only about meeting people from different contries, different cultures, but also about learning different ways of working, different solutions to adapt to the same problem. All these differences pile up together to craft the perfect start of my carrier, which I know will be a journey through an international environment.

The GT double degree was the master key to enter a large group, truly international as Total. I have been offered to worked in Paris, London, Houston, every time within the same company, and have always benefit from this very experience I had at Tech, learning to work with so many different sharp people.

Stephane ROUVILLOIS

Coventor

I chose GTL summer program because my brother did it 6 years ago and he recommended it. I also liked the fact that it was the only (or one of the only) GT study abroad program that had an actual campus, own facilities, and GT professors overseas. I also wanted to travel to many different countries and experience many different cultures and history. Some of the other programs were either expensive to travel to other countries (Oxford) or not many different cultures all together (Latin America or Asia Pacific).

The experience showed that I can adapt more easily than I thought. It also gave me confidence to travel alone or with a group.

I took a job offer with a global company headquartered out of Paris. The position will put me in France for 2 years. Not many companies, send their young or new employees overseas so this is a great opportunity. It opens me up to the global market and gives me a competitive advantage among people my age.

Michael AEBERHARD

Intern

Michelin

I found my internship at Michelin to be a very valuable experience. It gave me the opportunity to further my skills as an engineer, but also to learn the cultural differences in an international work environment. I quickly discovered that the engineering translates quite easily, but it was interesting to learn the differences in the engineering education system experienced by my French colleagues.

The most important aspect of my internship was the integration into French culture and learning the language, as it was difficult to find English-speaking persons outside of work. I hope that my experience in France will allow me to further pursue a career as an internationally-capable engineer.

Peter RENNER

Intern

Schlumberger

At my last internship I had to call manufacturers all over France and Europe and was often obligated to speak in French. I quickly improved my French, learned valuable communication skills
, and obtained an understanding of international business exchange. Aside from the work, I have learned so much about other cultures that I would be otherwise blind to in the United States. I am intrigued how we are all the same and different at the same time. Understanding how others view the US helped me to put it into perspective with the rest of the world.

While the US is particularly influential worldwide, I now cherish the opportunity to be influenced by other countries. Although my experiences in France have been fleeting, they have given me indispensable insight and balance that I will always carry with me.

Ali LAZZEM

Intern

Total

I joined the double degree program ENSAM / Georgia Tech in 2007. My first internship was in Paris with TOTAL Exploration & Production. I worked on the design of a platform in Nigeria (cost of the project: $3 billion). I was assisting the engineering manager on the design of the production deck. One of the characteristics of working on this kind of project is that engineers have a global view of the subject they are working on. Engineers have to understand and manage all the disciplines which are needed to build a platform (process, mechanical, structural, electrical, etc.).

The multidisciplinary knowledge that Georgia Tech students get is a key to the understanding of the global nature of the problems. For people who seek a fast career track within renowned companies such as Total, Georgia Tech is the perfect option.

I have done an 8-month internship at TOTAL E&P in the south of France. I participated in a highly challenging research project dealing with hydrocarbon reservoir characterization for an Offshore Indonesian Field. I designed a new prototype for better sub-seismic fault detection. Also, this internship was a great opportunity for me to work closely with several experts in the Geophysical domain. I really enjoyed the work atmosphere as well as the beauty of the French South Western Region.

I find the Oil & Gas Industry very exciting and it is the sector where I want to build my career. It permits me to travel worldwide and to be a part of multinational teamwork. My double degree Supelec and Georgia Tech is an undeniable asset for me to reach my objective.

France Telecom - North America

The Double Degree program offered by Georgia Tech & Supelec had undoubtably been a a key
For my graduation internship, I decided to do a 6-month internship as an analyst in marketing and technological strategy at FTNA (France Telecom North America) in New York.

FTNA is a part of the Orange - France Telecom Group and is specialized in both strategic market analysis of the U.S. market and business development, which consist in increasing the footprint of the group in the American market (especially in North America).
This internship was a perfect opportunity for me to use the knowledge and the skills I learnt during my training in both the Ecole des Mines de Nantes and Georgia Institute of Technology. This internship also enhanced the international side of my training and my professional profile.

During these 6 months, I worked most of the time with the wireless team. Knowing few things about the wireless market, with enthusiasm and with the help of my two supervisors, I managed to develop an expertise on the American wireless market.

My work at FTNA was divided in two tasks:
- Understanding and strategic analysis of the American wireless market.
- Developing the activities of the group in the U.S.: creation of a Showroom in the New York office and development of the New York Developer Centre for mobile application developers.

This internship was very enriching experience where I was not working for my superiors but with them, providing me with great responsibilities.

During the final year at the ENSEA (French engineer school in Electronics), I was attracted by the double degree program of GTL as it allowed me to transition smoothly from the French universitary system to graduate school of Georgiatech. Studying with a small group of students from all European countries and US in Metz is the perfect transition prior to go to the large campus of Gatech.

At GTL, I connected with fellow students who helped me then to integrate in the US campus. It represents also a very safe environment to attend American style classes with the security of having French speaking resources onsite in Metz in case you get lost !

The model of double diploma with European university is also more and more known in the US and the diploma of Gatech definitely helped me to get my first job offer in Atlanta. This is also the quickest way to be on the job market with a US diploma when coming for a french engineering school.

After joining General Electric via the Information Management Leadership Program with 4 six months assignements at GE Energy sites in Belfort (France), Atlanta and Florence (Italy) as IT project leader, I joined the company broad internal audit at GE Corporate called Corporate Audit Staff. In a 2 year period, this leadership program for GE top talent provides exposure to Finance, Compliance and the largest IT projects of the company.
I can conclude confirming that learning adaptability and flexibility between Paris, Metz and Atlanta early at the university definitely helped me to succeed in the various international assignments and teams I have worked with.

When I graduated and went to my French engineering school, I would deeply want to have an international career path. Uncertain of the opportunities I could have got from international companies during my studies, I've decided to take all the chances on my side and study abroad. GTL, that's to say Georgia Tech, quickly became the best option: famous American university, good ranking, diversified programs... Can't say I regret my choice.

Beyond all travels and entertainment you can have during this period, when you integrate a foreign school you get to experience the background of people you're likely to meet in your future career. You have a better understanding of what drives their decisions or judgements. Automatically you also adapt this education to your personal background. Anyway, Georgia Tech gives you the means to be successful in your studies but also to achieve this integration.

Personally, I've been hired in a French company by an American HR. My double degree has been a real motor in this hiring process but more importantly it granted me as well the trust of my French collaborators. Thanks to it I'll sure be granted the international career I hoped for. Eventually, since money drives the world, it's been as well of great help in this matter.

Rolls Royce Civil Nuclear is a sub company of the group Rolls Royce which works on the control system and instrumentation of nuclear power plants.
The subject of my internship is about applying modern signal processing technology to the neutron detector’s signal in order to have information like the reactor power and period. The algorithm in use right now is about 30 years old so it is believed that we can improve it with all the powerful electronics we have today.
Of course, my work is limited to the computer simulation, because everything about the nuclear reactor is so difficult to change due to security reasons. But still it is very interesting thing to make innovations.

I am working for the Instrumentation and Controls division of AREVA Nuclear Power. It is quite the opportunity to get to work in a French office in the heart of La Defense, Paris. My French is improving, and I get the chance to be involved in a company that is playing a big role in the energy industry. Perhaps the most interesting aspect of this internship is that I am working in a French office in conjunction with a German branch of the company on a contract for Chinese clients. During the course of a normal day I hear French, English, German, and Mandarin! The academic environment at Georgia Tech Lorraine, as well as my studies at the Université de Technologie de Compiègne prepared me well for the internship.

"The opportunity to study abroad while getting my Masters was a huge draw for me at GTL. I can now relate to others who come from other cultures, and the difficulties that come with expressing yourself in another language. My experience at GTL made me more attractive for employers who do work internationally.

I spent several years traveling to perform quality audits at electronics suppliers in the US and abroad. My experience at GTL enabled me to adapt to the culture of each company I visited, whether in England or China. I am currently teaching Electrical Engineering classes at my alma mater, Calvin College. I encourage all of my students to pursue overseas opportunities--it can only help students in their personal and professional lives!"

"I've always dreamt of traveling and living through studying or working in the US so my 1st choice was a US school.
GTL seemed to have had a partnership with my school so I chose it.
Also, Georgia Tech has a good reputation and high standards of quality in terms of education in the US so the choice was obvious.

It helped me broaden my vision of the world, especially experiencing a new style of education and a new culture. It was a unique and very enriching experience living with people from different cultures and from different origins.

It helped me know better what I wanted as a career and for my future professional life.
I am now working for SFR the 1st alternative Telecom Operator of France as a Marketing Manager. Georgia Tech helped me realize I liked Marketing better than Engineering through the Minor and Elective courses I took during my cursus."

I wanted to have an international experience which could give me at the same time the highest level of education, and I wanted this experience to be gradual so that I could get the most out of it without wasting my time catching up with a totally new system. GTL gave me all the support I needed.

I can now understand why people see things in a different way: living studying and working with people sharing different cultures broaden your mind and you understand how things can have different meanings according to what your life experiences had been. I learnt to bend my habits and prejudices to get the best out of every life experience.

An international profile is something that companies look for eagerly. This, together with the high level of education that GTL provides, landed me a dream job only two weeks after I started applying for jobs: I in fact recently joined Symantec in their graduate programme . The Job orientations at GTL will also give all what it takes to face in the best way the post-graduation job-hunting days.

I spent 13 years overseas and always wanted to study in a large American university. GeorgiaTech is one of the top graduate engineering schools and has a global name attached to it. In this global world I believe that this is extremely important as I was not expecting to work all my life in France. Apart from the brand name and the fact that it is a school known worldwide, I was also looking for the flexibility given in American universities where it is possible to follow electives in other schools and discover new subjects not always available in French engineering schools.

The experience was simply great. A lot of the people I met are friends with whom I kept contact, whether they are in the same city I live in or overseas.

The courses I followed, notably those in financial management made me want to work in that field. After having worked as a risk consultant, I am now business analyst within an asset management company.

Actually I was not looking for Georgia Tech’s European Campus in detail but I was looking for an American university with an excellent reputation that offers a master’s degree within an exchange program. Fortunately Georgia Tech has such an agreement with my former Alma Matter “Technische Universität München”. It has been part of the program to spent one semester at GTL. Although I did not originally consider another European country I did have a great time in France: Refreshing my French language knowledge, joining a local bicycle racing club or just hanging out and discover the area.

Being of German origin GTL, especially the French location, did not introduce a new culture to me. However it provided me with the great opportunity to cooperate with groups of American as well as French colleagues and learn about their way of thinking and problem solving. It has been a valuable experience to slight differences in their behavior and will definitely sharpen my sense in interaction with other nationalities and maybe in leading or organization.

Today I am working towards my PHD in electrical engineering at TUM. The study program at GTL broadened my horizon and encouraged me to focus into medical devices and biotechnology. Because I do not plan to stay in academia, the very close contact to the professors at GTL and the entrepreneurial thinking of the American teaching staff took my fears away and showed me how technology can be brought to the market.

Amount of opportunities to kick-off the career one is offered at GTL is quite impressive. As an ME student here closing out on my graduation with just one semester left to go I was extremely interested in finding a challenging internship which would help me fulfill my job-seeking goals as a future young graduate and my professional ambitions later on.

The internship I did at Calderys was undoubtfully an experience to relish. There are several things which make me think of it that way.
As I quickly adjusted myself to the new environment, I enjoyed working for a big international company abroad from the very beginning of my internship. I still had to go back to study, so for me it was not only a perfect opportunity to gain precious hands-on experience but also a chance to see what the company’s business was about and figure out whether I liked it or not.

I did most part of my internship (6 months) near Frankfurt, Germany and then moved to Vienna, Austria for the last month to get to know company’s head office. My level of spoken German – as it was the main conversational languag e at work throughout the internship – greatly improved.
On the other hand, working in the refractory industry was a challenging experience. I discovered plenty of things I had not known before. And so I could learn as there were plenty of possibilities and options.
And finally, at the end of my internship Calderys offered me a job and I accepted the offer. So now, even though I am still yet to graduate, a job in Vienna, Austria is already waiting for me.

Studying at Georgia Tech was a great opportunity to get a recognized American degree and to complement/enhance my French engineering degree while strengthening my English, discovering a new culture and meeting people from various horizons.

Following Georgia Tech, I spent close to 5 years in the US out of which 4 based in Atlanta that I chose for the network of people I had met while at GT.

The GT degree helped me greatly to first find a one year contract for a French company in the US, and to then get hired in the US by Celerant Consulting where I still am after 10 years.

I gained more friends and an additional international experience which helped me grow as a person. This feeling of self-development still persists today.

Huge, huge impact on my professional career.
As I had planned, Tech opened up doors that I wouldn't have been able to set my foot into had I not decided to make the investment. The fact that Tech is highly recognized in the US and worldwide gave my resume a strong credibility. From starting my career at Infosys India for a brief summer, to becoming a consultant at Accenture and now earning my MBA degree at Wharton, it is absolutely clear to me that my Tech degree is the reason I am where I am right now."

"As an undergrad, I felt a natural draw toward international engineering. I spent my Junior year studying abroad in Germany, and when I finished, I knew I’d return to Europe soon. Little did I know, less than a year later I’d be one of the pioneers of the Georgia Tech Lorraine program, and taking a journey that has me positioned as CEO of a global software firm.

When I initially inquired about the program, Dr. Puttgen (the first President of Georgia Tech Lorraine) asked if I could be in France in 2 weeks, and the rest as they say, is history. I left for France without knowing any French, and not knowing exactly where I was going. The program was so new, there wasn’t even a building when I arrived. Despite the initial physical limitations, my time at GTL proved to be a cultural awakening; and an experience that propelled me into international entrepreneurialism.

I enrolled in the dual MS degree program with Supelec, a grand ecole in France, where I learned to speak French fluently and developed a global perspective; one that’s become the hallmark of the Georgia Tech Lorraine program. Following graduation, I’ve been in leadership roles with several global software firms, developing innovative software products and bringing them to market. Today, I’m currently CEO at KXEN, an organization that provides next generation business analytics software to drive improved corporate decisions. I developed my global commerce skills at Georgia Tech Lorraine and Supelec and it’s clear that without my time there, I wouldn’t be in the position I am today. This global preparation and approach to education and cultural awareness, has helped fuel innovation throughout the Lorraine region, Europe, and the southern United States. As part of the inaugural class of five, I’m proud to be part of an alumni base of over 1,500 worldwide."

Christophe DELETANG

"When time came to enrich my engineer curriculum with international exposure, Tech stood out as a natural choice . Basically I thought Georgia Tech could give me the “bang for the buck” I was looking for. The quality of the faculty, the richness of diversity among students (different nationalities, different schools, ...), the uniqueness of the program with its dual platform in France and in the US, the learning environment: all these factors made GT a firsthand choice. Not to forget the fact the institution constantly ranks as a TOP university...

Our thoughts are limited by our knowledge and by our experience. Some sociologists would argue the world is a place we are looking through glasses, each person having its own paires. Meet different people, try to understand various cultures or learn from new experiences, and you will change your vision of the world. Georgia Tech enlarged my vision both from a scientific and a personal standpoint, and has allowed me so far to design a career that satisfies my natural curiosity.

I guess my experience at Tech played a great role in facilitating my job : as an engineer on complex problem-solving of system integration for the scientific part; as a representative at NATO for the communication part e.g.

I also consider Tech as a decisive and essential milestone on my way to obtain a MBA for a more business-oriented career."

"In our business today world it is important to have an international background. When I arrived in Metz as student in Supelec, I discovered Georgia Tech Lorraine and so I applied for a Master Degree.

This experience was unique : experience the student american way of life on a such a campus as GaTech and to compare american and french education (French is more focus on theory and American on pratical).
Last but not least, it improved my English quite a lot. I have used every day since...

As it was quite difficult to apply for an expatriated job with foreign state administration customers without any experience, the double degree Supelec / GaTech was a "kind of warranty" for my boss : it meant the combination of one of the leading french engineering school diploma with an international experience.

So I started my career in a french multinational company, but in Finland.
After 11 years, I worked in 9 different countries (Australia, Lithuania, Sweden, Egypt) and after having started as simple integrator, I'm now Project Manager for a 10th different country..."

I choosed Georgia Tech for 3 main reasons: the reputation of GT (top 5 in engineering schools in the USA), then, to improve my english skills and finally for the multi-cultural and international aspect. Up to now, I do not regret my choice at all, GTL being now my second family !

Being from Tunisia, and having done my engineering degree in Toulouse, I needed another experience abroad. doing a master at Georgia Tech was a perfect opportunity. I had the chance to meet different people from different countries/nationalities and you can't imagine how much we learn from them !
Moreover, the education system is so much differnt: as opposed to French schools which are more focusing in theory, the american system is away more practical and thus more efficient !

During my study at Georgia Tech Lorraine, I had several opportunities to meet with recruters from different companies (French and international). I can mention the weekly seminars in which professional come present their business and share their experience with us. I loved both air shows in which I participated: the Bourget (in Paris) and Ela (in Berlin) which were completely free of charge (hotel included) for GTL students and really awesome. We felt so important for the different companies which organized workshops to talk to us !
Last, but not least, we had some workshops at GTL during which companies talk to us and help us looking for jobs/internships.

Moreover, to find the approriate internship or job was made easier with the GTL team helping you. "I chose Georgia Tech because the Mechanical Engineering Masters program was very highly ranked in the nation. After visiting 4 different "top 10" schools, I chose GA Tech because I liked the location, the research, and it gave me the opportunity to study abroad. I had always wanted to study internationally but could never afford to, the GTL program gave me the opportunity to complete my masters while studying abroad.
Attending GA Tech and participating in the GTL program was by far the best decision I have ever made. It made me grow as a person and as a student. It forced me to understand and empathize with other cultures and it made me think about many preconceived ideas I had about life, politics, dreams and who I was. Plus, as an added bonus, I met my husband (who also was participating in the GTL program)!
I haven't realized the impacts on my professional career yet, however, I hope to be working internationally soon and I hope that my GTL experience will come in handy doing international work."

"I choose GTL in order to have an American degree much more acknowledged worldwide than my French degree of Supélec, in order to envision more easily an international career. Studies in America are very expensive, but with GTL you can do 2 semesters in France and the 3rd in the US, thus the American degree is more affordable.

It helps to open to the American culture, and experience the American campus lifestyle (big, with lots of sport facilities, and quite a variety of courses in Atlanta). It also greatly impacted the job offers afterwards.

I appreciated the important link with the various industries, French or American. Without GTL, I wouldn't have been invited by EADS to the ILA Berlin Air show, neither by Schlumberger to an all-day long insight of the industry. And each time there are internships/job possibilities. For instance, I accepted an internship offer that was sent to GTL students, and now, I am going to work for Schlumberger!"

The unique background I had obtained through the GTL double degree program, including a 1 year experience in the US, has then been decisive in the selection process at EADS."

"Whether it was Georgia Tech's academic reputation or the score of the latest football game, growing up in the south I had always known Georgia Tech. I knew at a young age that if I could be accepted, I would go there. Being located in the center of Atlanta also made Georgia Tech irresistible to me. I wanted to stay close to home, but live away at the same time. This made for the perfect choice.

Campus life was very dynamic and exciting. I met so many wonderful friends during my Tech years. We studied together, we went out together, and we basically grew into adults together. So even though we are dispersed throughout the world today, we are still close and hoping our children will one day be able to sing the Ramblin' Wreck fight song together just like we did!

Georgia Tech taught me to start a project and see it to completion from the smallest classroom assignment all the way to the defense of my thesis. Learning to work with both my peers and my mentors in different settings enhanced my problem-solving and time-management skills, as well as my learning flexibility. Where I am now, I have had to learn a new language and adjust to a new country away from family and friends. Georgia Tech gave me the confidence to know that this could be accomplished. Now as a full-time wife, mother, and active community leader, I see why we say, “we don’t fit the mold, we make it!” "

" After five years studying in downtown Toulouse (Fermat and Enseeiht), I decided to move to Lorraine join Georgia Tech, School of ECE. It could seem a foolish decision in the beginning, as Toulouse is, with Paris, the most attractive town for students and engineers in the country (cf EADS Airbus and Astrium, Thales, ...). It has been the second best decision of my life.

After spring 2010 in Metz, I joined the PhD program, which turned out to be the best decision of my life. First I have met my girlfriend, and then I am working on fascinating science (III-N solar cells, and now graphene), while spending a lot of time in labs, whether here in GTL or in the Nanotechnology Research Center cleanroom in Georgia Tech Atlanta.
Also to release some stress I enjoy going to Sarrebrucken, which is a small paradise only 40 miles east of Metz, on the German side. There are plenty of small lakes all around for summer, and Christmas time is really dynamic in Alsace-Lorraine-Saarland.

As a conclusion the jobs are here! The GTL team creates lots of employment opportunities in world-leading companies (cf EADS, Thales, Schlumberger, Total, General Electric, ...). Georgia Tech is definitely a financial and personal investment worth making!"

"Having completed an advanced degree in Applied Physics before studying at GTL, my primary goal was to specialize further on the practical side of optical engineering. My goal was to live, study, and work in France while achieving language fluency. The GTL program interested me because it enabled me to attend Supelec, and to do a 6-month internship, and to completely immerse myself in the French language except for a short period of the initial GTL classes.

The benefits were:
- Learning French language and culture was outstanding.
- In a school setting, the French students were very welcoming and excited to share about their culture (more than American counterparts do with foreign students in the USA, I believe).
- Studying, living and working abroad opened the door later in my life to other similar opportunities to travel, live and work abroad. It is amazing how one's knowledge and experience can be the deciding factor in opening the door to other experiences.
- Learning about a culture is not complete until one learns the language and hopefully lives in the country. GTL enabled this experience and it was immensely rewarding.

Major traceable impacts:
- I was selected for my first job at Intel Corp back in 1997 based not only on my educational background, but also the interest and competence in dealing with diverse cultures.
- I was offered the chance to live and work in Italy again later in my life based on my demonstrated interest and competence in this area.
- My ability to negotiate and interact with individuals and organizations across all cultures has been greatly enhanced by the understanding and experiences I acquired through the GTL experience.
There are undoubtedly many less directly traceable positive impacts."

While at Supelec in France, I selected the Metz campus so I can also attend Georgia Tech. I later moved to Atlanta to finish a Masters in EE I started in Metz. Upon my graduation, I was hired in an R&D center at Schlumberger in the USA where I had the opportunity to work in the team that invented and marketed a new generation of Smart Cards. A few years later, I founded omNovia Technologies which has been a successful venture.

Attending GTL evidently changed the course of my life in a very positive way. Beyond the important linguistic, academic and cultural impacts, GTL allowed me to acquire a solid and confident position in the US.
